I came to the bar as a second career after 17 years in business publishing, and bring experience of customer relations and marketing. Solicitors inform me that one of their reasons for briefing me is that I manage difficult clients well; particularly those with demanding relatives!
There is no shortage of knowledgeable counsel with strong advocacy skills. I am led to believe I combine these with adept client management. This can be especially relevant where the client's wishes run counter to their best interests. Steering a path that combines what they want, with the best legal advice ensures they stay with the same counsel and, most importantly, the same instructing solicitor.
Most solicitors have horror stories about counsel that knew the law but irritated the client. If this is familiar, maybe it's time for a change.
